Last Update:
The European Union has agreed on a major overhaul of air passenger rights - the most comprehensive reform in the past 12 years. The updated rules address flight delays and cancellations, refund conditions, and baggage handling.
Some of the most important updates include:
🔁 Rebooking and alternative routes:
Passengers now have the right to an alternative route, including rebooking with another airline or even using other forms of transport. If the airline fails to offer a suitable alternative within 3 hours of a cancellation or delay, passengers may book their own travel and claim reimbursement of up to 400% of the original ticket price.
💶 Compensation for delays and cancellations:
The amount of compensation depends on flight distance and delay duration:
- For intra-EU flights up to 3,500 km delayed by over 4 hours – €300.
- For flights over 3,500 km delayed by 6+ hours – €500.
Passengers will also be entitled to compensation if a flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure.
📝 Easier complaints process & response deadlines:
Passengers will have up to 6 months to submit a complaint. Airlines will be required to respond within 14 days, either issuing compensation or giving a justified refusal. In cases of extraordinary circumstances, carriers must clearly state what occurred.
