Last Update:

Perhaps I have said this before, but it should be in each notebook: a short story (or a novel-germ) must come from an inspiration which, on first acquaintance, seems better suited for a poem. Action germs are usually successful only when the element of oddity or excitement or queerness is developed. And the writer, like a man in the beginning of his love, should be passive to the inspiration of the world and the earth, who is his seducer. She plays with him, forces herself upon him until he becomes conscious of her. He never seeks deliberately. Inspiration comes many ways at many times, but I like best inspiration with a smile on one’s face and a relaxation in the body. Such inspiration is healthy and strong.

The sex act should be done either in a white heat or with the best sense of humor. Technique is a matter of imagination, and consideration only of the other person; a talent never found in men.

Worked on story. Wrote Babs & gave family bottle of Crème de Cacao. Delivered it myself. Bought Rosalind Eric Coates’ “London Again Suite.” Perhaps she can understand English music. I can’t think much of it. Buffie called last night about dinner party tonight. I went with her. Drunk & exhausted, phoned Helen secretly after martinis & champagne. She was glad to hear me—I loved her & told her so—and she said to get over it. Buffie knew. At least she knows it isn’t Rosalind now.
