Третьего дня посмотрел вторую серию «Засланец из космоса», (Resident Alien) и приметил выражение to take a rain check (on something). Заинтересовался, полез в инернеты и словари, нашел - делюсь с вами.

🇺🇸to take a rain check (on something) :
▶️politely decline an offer, with the implication that one may take it up at a later date.
▶️used to tell someone that you cannot accept an invitation now, but would like to do so at a later time
🇷🇺откладывать, переносить.

Примеры употребления:

✳️Mind if I take a rain check on that drink? I have to work late tonight.

✳️They wanted me to come along for the ride but I took a rain check.

Весьма интересно то, откуда взялось такое выражение. Оказывается, изначальна фраза пошла из бейсбола, когда болельщикам выдавались специальные ваучеры, если вдруг игра откладывалась по причине дождя, дающие право им вернуться и посмотреть другую игру. Такие вот дела.

Весьма интересно то, откуда взялось такое выражение. Оказывается, изначальна фраза пошла из бейсбола, когда болельщикам выдавались специальные ваучеры, если вдруг игра откладывалась по причине дождя, дающие право им вернуться и посмотреть другую игру. Такие вот дела.
