"Shopping around" for a publication outlet?
Dear colleagues,
We are increasingly noticing that authors “shop their papers around” – they send them from one journal to another hoping that one of those journals will “bite”. The pattern of shopping papers around seems to be one where authors work down some journal ranking list. As a result, we see many of those papers crossing our desks … and getting rejected.
Unless a manuscript genuinely fits the aims and scope of a journal, it is extremely unlikely to be published. Therefore, every time a paper is being “shopped around” it wastes the authors’ and editor’s time. A more promising publishing strategy is to genuinely engage with the target journal (read many papers published in the journal, especially those directly relevant to the study, familiarise yourself with the style of papers published in the journal, get a feeling for how many figures and tables are typically included in the manuscript itself, ensure that you prepare the manuscript in line with submission guidelines, run the manuscript through a text similarity checker to be safe, ….). This approach leads to a much higher chance of a paper being published than the “shopping around” strategy.
Best wishes,
