دانشمندان مرکز جان اینز کشف کردند که توانایی باکتری‌ها در گسترش بیماری در گیاهان گسترده‌تر از تصورات قبلی است. آن‌ها با بررسی باکتری Pseudomonas syringae نشان دادند که توکسین «سیرین‌گومایسین» می‌تواند هم بر گیاهان گل‌دار و هم بر گیاهان بدون گل تأثیر بگذارد. آزمایش‌ها نشان داد که این توکسین در گیاهان بدون گل، مانند جگرواش‌ها و سرخس‌ها، آسیب بافتی ایجاد کرده و فعالیت ژن‌های مرتبط با استرس را تحریک می‌کند. این نتایج نشان داد که گیاهان بدون گل نیز به اندازه گیاهان گل‌دار مستعد ابتلا به بیماری‌های باکتریایی هستند، حتی با وجود تفاوت‌های تکاملی ۵۰۰ میلیون ساله بین این گیاهان.
