Everyone is asking each other whether students should be able to use AI or if it’s cheating. Wrong question. Instead ask, how can academia go back to teaching students how to think again, not just what to think, and how to innovate, create and discover again, not just how to write book reports. This is why PhDs have such an advantage over other job candidates in today’s job market. As a PhD, you are a Doctor of Philosophy, which is to say, a doctor of learning and how to learn. To get a PhD, you have to move beyond mastering a field (book reports) to adding to a field (discovering and innovating). This makes you irreplaceable in a world of people getting replaced by AI daily. Make sure you are communicating these unique strengths in your job search.
