كان العلامة السعدي - رحمه الله - كثيرًا ما يَتبنّى آراءَ شيخِ الإسلام ابن تيمية وتلميذه ابن القيم (رحمهما الله)، ويُرَجِّحُهما على المشهور في المذهب الحنبلي، فقد كان مُتَجَرِّدًا للحق، ولا يَقبل الجُمُود على مذهب مُعيّن .. انتقلت هذه الصّفة منه إلى تلميذه ابن عثيمين - رحمه الله -، وقد استفاد الشيخ ابن عثيمين مِن هذه الخصيصة التي امتاز بها شيخُه السعدي، وتأثّر بشيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية، وخصوصًا طريقته العلمية في الحِرص على بناء الأحكام على الأدلة، ومحاولة ربط الأقوال الفقهية بالنصوص الشرعية؛ لذلك لا تجد في فتاوى الشيخ ابن عثيمين قولًا لا يستند إلى دليل.
