Лагерь был основан для детей, страдающих туберкулезом, по инициативе председателя Российского общества Красного Креста Зиновия Соловьева.
Первые дети жили в брезентовых палатках, позже были построены фанерные домики и зимний корпус. В годы Великой Отечественной войны детский лагерь был эвакуирован, но уже в августе 1944 года открылась первая смена. В 1991 году «Артек» получил статус Международного детского центра.
