Симбирск стал одним из первых городов Российской империи, имевших современный водопровод. Целый комплекс сооружений (фильтры, насосная станция с паровым водозабором, будками и пожарными кранами, водонапорная башня высотой 21,3 метра, ёмкостью в 10 000 вёдер) был открыт в 1872 году. Водонапорная башня на Венце, у входа во Владимирский сад, стала одним из символов дореволюционного города, увы, не дожившим до нашего времени.
