За верность учению Иисуса Христа он был жестоко замучен властями в Славгородской темнице. Позже, в бессознательном состоянии, Николай Кузьмич был перевезен в Барнаульскую тюрьму, где и умер. Подвиг веры этого простого христианина-мученика укрепил взаимно скрепляющие связи гонимой церкви. Месяц спустя, образован Совет родственников узников церкви ЕХБ в СССР. Смерть Н. К. Хмара стала катализатором движения заступничества.
