❓Hello, Barış! Thank you for joining us. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hello! I’m Barış Adar Demir from Türkiye, currently studying Applied Linguistics and TESOL at SPbPU.
❓What inspired you to study in Russia?
It was an easy choice for me. I’ve always been fascinated by Russian culture, language, and history. I also had Russian friends who shared their experiences, which helped me understand life in Russia before I arrived.
❓How did you find out about the opportunity to study in Russia?
I learned about it through the Government of the Russian Federation's quota, with support from my professors at İzmir Demokrasi University. They informed me about the scholarship program and guided me through the application process.
❓ What attracted you to SPbPU?
The university's strong international reputation and quality educational programs were key factors. Its high ranking and excellent academic resources made it a clear choice. Plus, the international community aligns with my passion for cultural exchanges.
❓ How has your experience been so far in Russia?
Adapting has been challenging due to the language barrier. Although I speak four languages, daily communication can be tough since English isn’t widely spoken outside academic settings. However, I see this as an opportunity to learn Russian quickly. Overall, my experience at SPbPU has been positive, with a stimulating academic environment and approachable professors.
❓Have you gotten involved in extracurricular activities?
Yes! I recently joined the journalism and speaking clubs, which provide great opportunities to meet fellow students, improve my communication skills, and engage in discussions on various topics.
❓What are your plans after completing your degree?
I’m considering staying in Russia if I can find opportunities in linguistics. The country offers unique career prospects, and I’m eager to contribute to its academic and professional landscapes.
❓What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Saint Petersburg has a special allure for me. The stunning architecture and iconic bridges make it feel dreamlike. I love spending time in parks like the Summer Garden and Tavricheskiy Park, where I can relax and enjoy the beauty around me.
❓What advice would you give to other international students considering studying in Russia?
I highly recommend it! Studying abroad offers invaluable personal and academic growth, and Russia is a great destination for those interested in its rich culture and history. The cultural similarities between Turkish and Russian people make adaptation easier. For anyone passionate about the Russian language and culture, studying here is a rewarding experience.
❓ Thank you, Barış, for sharing your insights! We wish you all the best in your studies.
Thank you!
