این موجود خارق‌العاده به خاطر بدن پشمالویش که شبیه به پوشش سگ‌های پودل است، به این نام شهرت یافته است. اما با وجود ظاهر زیبا، اطلاعات کمی در مورد این موجود وجود دارد، زیرا که این پروانه به تازگی، در سال ۲۰۰۹، در جنگل‌های گرمسیری ونزوئلا کشف شده است. حتی طبقه‌بندی دقیق آن به عنوان گونه‌ای جدید در حال بررسی است!
