🔆 Karnataka Adopts Two-Language Policy for 90% of Schools

📍 Summary (UPSC Focus)
Karnataka State Education Policy (SEP) Commission recommends a two-language policy for all government, aided & private Kannada and English-medium schools.
Languages taught: Kannada (1st language) + English (2nd language).
Exception: Linguistic minority schools (Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, etc.) will continue three-language teaching, including mother tongue; 3rd language is optional & not assessed.
• Abandons three-language formula (which included Hindi) in the State’s education system.

🔆 MERITE Scheme (2025–30)

📍 News
Union Cabinet approved the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) Scheme for 275 technical institutions (175 engineering + 100 polytechnics).

🔹 About the Scheme

Objective → Improve quality, equity & governance in technical education (aligned with NEP 2020).
Collaboration → With World Bank.
Nodal Ministry → Ministry of Education.
Type → Central Sector Scheme.
Budget → ₹4,200 crore (2025–30)
• ₹2,100 crore external loan (World Bank).

🔹 Beneficiaries

275 Govt/Govt-aided institutions → NITs, State Engineering Institutes, Polytechnics, ATUs.
State/UT technical education departments also supported.
~7.5 lakh students to benefit.
