زرتشت باور داشت که انسان موجودی آزاد است و در تصمیم‌گیری‌های خود اختیار دارد؛ او می‌تواند انتخاب کند که در کنار نیروهای روشنایی بایستد یا در صف نیروهای تاریکی قرار گیرد. زرتشت این آزادی را هدیه‌ای از جانب اهورامزدا می‌دانست که از آغاز به انسان‌ها بخشیده شده‌است؛ در عین حال، به خوبی درک می‌کرد این آزادی می‌تواند به معنی آزادیِ گرویدن به نیروهای شر هم باشد.
