سیمرغ در شاهنامهٔ فردوسی دو چهرهٔ متفاوت یزدانی (در داستان زال) و اهریمنی (در هفت خوان اسفندیار) دارد؛ زیرا همهٔ موجودات ماوراء طبیعت نزد ثنویان (دوگانه پرستان) دوقلوی متضاد هستند. سیمرغ اهریمنی بیشتر یک مرغ اژدهاست، فاقد استعدادهای قدسی سیمرغ یزدانی است و به دست اسفندیار در خوان پنجمش کشته می‌شود
In Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, Simorgh has two different faces: Yazdani (in Zal's story) and Ahrimani (in Esfandiar's Haft Khan). Because all the supernatural beings are opposite twins for the Tanuyans (dual worshipers). The demonic Simorgh is more of a dragon chicken, it lacks the divine talents of the Yazdani Simorgh and is killed by Esfandiar in his fifth reading.
