💢 بیماری وپیل یک بیماری عفونی نادر است که توسط باکتری (Tropheryma whipplei) ایجاد می‌شود. این باکتری در صورت عدم درمان می‌تواند کشنده باشد. تنها جایگاه طبیعی این باکتری روده انسان شناخته می‌شود.
💢 این باکتری در برابر کشت (در محیط کشت معمولی) مقاومت می‌کند چرا که کشت این باکتری مستلزم وجود سلول میزبان یوکاریوتیزنده است. به‌همین دلیل در بیمارانی که اکثراً با علائم غیر اختصاصی به پزشک مراجعه می‌کنند تشخیص این عفونت دشوار است.
