જીવન
તેમનો જન્મ સુરતમાં થયો હતો. તેમણે અંગ્રેજી વિષયમાં સ્નાતક અને અનુસ્નાતકની પદવીઓ મેળવીને ‘વિ. એસ. નાયપોલની નવલકથા’ પર પીએચ.ડી. નો અભ્યાસ કર્યો હતો. ૧૯૬૮ થી તેઓ સુરતની એમ. ટી. બી. આર્ટ્સ કૉલેજમાં અંગ્રેજીનાં વ્યાખ્યાતા તરીકેનું કાર્ય કર્યું હતું. ૧૯૯૫માં તેમણે ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણીના પુત્ર વિનોદ મેઘાણી સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા હતા.
તેઓ ૨૦૧૩-૨૦૧૭ના સમયગાળા માટે સાહિત્ય અકાદમીના સલાહકાર મંડળના સભ્ય છે.
