The boys flew a noon mission on the 26th, but due to a shortage of planes, did not go up in anything near full strength, and as the boys returned, we ended up with one less. The wind had picked up, and by afternoon, it was howling. In spite of conditions, White Flight decided on a formation landing. Bateman was #4 in his flight, and his flight leader lined himself up on the center
of the field, which put the rest on the downhill slope. The flight lead handled it OK. #2 bounced a bit, #3 (Dittmer) had to fight to get it down, and Bateman was all over the place. His plane actually did a complete roll, scraping both wings but settling on its gear in an upright position. I witnessed the whole thing. When his ship rolled to a stop, Bateman threw back the canopy and jumped off the left wing and ran a good 50 yards with his parachute and dingy smacking him in the butt with every stride. He is one lucky hombre!




We went to his debriefing to give him support but then needled him about his landing skills, just to ease the tension. He was a good sport but kept shaking a bit all through the movie we made him attend. Bateman has a terrific sense of humor, so we felt free to tease him. In reality, he is a very good pilot, and we are smart enough to know that if such an accident could happen to him, it could happen to any of us.
