ایستگاه فضایی بین المللی (iss) از شانزده ماژول تشکیل شده است که چهار ماژول روسی (Pirs, Zvezda, Poisk and Rassvet)، نه ماژول امریکایی (Zarya, BEAM, Leonardo, Harmony, Quest, Tranquility, Unity, Cupola, and Destiny)، دو ماژول ژاپنی (the JEM-ELM-PS and JEM-PMو یک ماژول(Columbus) ساخته اژانس فضایی اتحادیه اروپاست
اولین ماژول ایستگاه فضایی، ماژول زاریا روسی بود که در تاریخ 1998/11/20 به فضا ارسال شد و یک ماه بعد اولین ماژول امریکایی یونیتی به همراه دو داکت PMA-1,2 توسط شاتل فضایی اندوور به ان متصل شد که با نام node-1 شناخته میشود.
