ذكر أحد تلامذة شيخ الاسلام ابن تيمية أنه لما روجع في كثرةِ ردوده على أهل البدع، قال:
ولقد أكثر شيخ الإسلام رضي الله عنه التصنيف في الأصول، فضلًا عن غيرها من بقية العلوم، فسألته عن سبب ذلك، فقال:
(إني رأيتُ أهل البدع والضلالات والأهواء قصدوا إبطال الشَّرِيعَة، وأوقعوا النَّاس فِي التشكيك فِي أصول دينهم، فبان لي أنه يجب على كل من يقدر على دفع شُبَههم وأباطيلهم وَقطع حجتهم وأضاليلهم أن يَبْذُلَ جُهده ليكشف رذائلهم، ويُزيِّف دلائلهم ذبًّا عَن المِلّة الحنيفية والسّنّة الصحِيحَة الجليّة.
فهذا ونحوُه هو الذي أَوْجَبَ أنّي صرَفتُ جُلَّ همّي إلى الأصول، وألزمَني أن أوردتُ مقالاتِهم وأجبتُ عنها بما أنعم الله- تعالى- به من الأجْوبة النقلية والعقلية).
