روزی رسول خدا صلی‌الله علیه و آله و سلم در جمع اصحاب فرمودند:
أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِذَا أَنَا اسْتُشْهِدْتُ فَعَلِيٌّ أَوْلَى بِكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ ( ای مردم، آنگاه که من به شهادت رسیدم، #علی علیه‌السلام از خودتان بر شما سزاوارتر است )
پس علی بن ابی.طالب علیهماالسلام از جای خود برخواست و درحالی که می‌گریست، گفت: پدر و مادرم فدای شما ای پیامبر خدا، آیا شما کشته می‌شوید؟!
حضرت فرمود: نَعَمْ أَهْلِكُ شَهِيداً بِالسَّمِّ؛ آری به وسیلۀ سمّ #شهید خواهم شد!
