St. Paul Hospital to Host Ethiopia’s First-Ever National Spine Treatment Facility.

In a landmark moment for the nation's healthcare system, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), officially launched the construction of the National Spine Center at St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College.

For nearly two decades, JDC has supported Ethiopian patients with severe spinal deformities, often facilitating complex, life-changing surgeries abroad. The new center marks a transformative step—bringing that critical care home. Ethiopian spine surgeons, trained through JDC-supported programs, will lead the center, providing advanced, specialized treatment locally for the first time.

The National Spine Center is expected to serve as strengthening Ethiopia’s healthcare infrastructure and reducing the need for medical travel abroad.

Graduate Nursing Class Completes Team Training Program at Kolfe and Felege Melese Health Centers

The Graduate Class of Post-Basic Nursing, representing five specialty areas, has successfully concluded their five-week Team Training Program (TTP) at Kolfe Health Center and Felege Melese Health Center in Addis Ababa. During their field placement, students actively engaged in a range of impactful community-based initiatives. These included the renovation of public latrines, the delivery of health education on chronic and communicable diseases, waste disposal, and capacity-building efforts within the health centers, among others.

Additionally, in collaboration with the nursing staff of the college, students provided essential training on Neonatal Resuscitation for health center staff and First Aid to Health Extension workers, further strengthening local service delivery. Their work exemplified the college's ongoing commitment to developing compassionate, community-oriented professionals capable of mobilizing local resources for the public good.

The symposium celebrating their work featured student presentations on their experiences, challenges, and accomplishments, underscoring the power of applied learning. The gathering also acknowledged essential collaborators—local health offices and community members—for their invaluable assistance, expressing a common vision for meaningful, collaborative education.

This initiative highlights the importance of practical training in nursing education and its positive impact on community health outcomes.
