При этом дважды (в 2011 и 2021 году) был вынужден отказаться от мандата под давлением Геннадия Зюганова, потому как стареющий лидер коммунистов определился с приёмником. И по мнению почётного орловчанина Зюганова, Клычков в Москве будет лишним.
