The ancient rock-hewn churches of #Lalibela in Ethiopia are deteriorating after centuries of heavy rain.

Cracks, dampness and erosion worsen each rainy season, despite earlier protection efforts.

Temporary canopies installed 17 years ago shield five churches but are widely criticised as unsightly.

Local clergy warn that damage is accelerating, with rocks dropping and cracks widening yearly.

Built in the 12th century under King Lalibela, the site remains a centre of worship and pilgrimage.

The Ethiopian government and #UNESCO now plan one giant canopy to safeguard all 11 churches.

An international architectural competition will be launched to design a solution that blends with the landscape.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Lalibela in northeastern Ethiopia.

The #WorldArchitectureDay2025 theme “Design for Strength” highlights the role of architecture in building resilience, preserving memory, and offering hope in times of uncertainty.

Born in the aftermath of war, the UIA was founded on the belief that architecture is not an instrument of destruction, but a vehicle for reconstruction, memory, and dignity.

On this World Architecture Day, we renew our commitment to build a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world through design that honours the past and inspires the future.

A day to remember a legend. If not today then when?

Remembering the architectural giant Arturo Mezzedimi, on this #WorldArchitectureDay2025, who realised over 100 buildings in #Ethiopia.

An autograph by HIM Emperor Haile Selassie, 1970, honours Mezzedimi (see picture above):

"What architect Mezzedimi accomplished on so many occasions is to be cherished."

Commemorating Abune Petros the Bishop "The repression against the Ethiopians for the attack on Addis Abeba & the disruption of the #railwayline had its #heroes. The first important one was #AbunePetros. After a staged public trial for participation in the…
"The marble gentleman of Addis Abeba, Piazza area stands eternally pensive, hand to chest as if swearing loyalty to an invisible audience. In reality, he is the #statue of Abune Petros, the Ethiopian bishop executed by Italian forces in 1936 for resisting the #Fascist occupation. Today, he gazes over a city jammed with traffic, bureaucracy, and high-rise ambitions, holding a broken chain that once symbolised defiance but now competes with satellite dishes and billboards. History wanted him remembered as a martyr; urban life has quietly recast him as a traffic landmark."
