Client: Ethiopian Electric Power (#EEP)
Location: 700 km north-west of the capital Addis Abeba, about 14 km from the border between Ethiopia and #Sudan, in the #Benishangul_Gumuz region along the #BlueNile.
Size: Largest hydropower project in Africa, and one of worlds top 10.
Engineering dimensions: 1,800 m long, 170 m high (main gravity dam) and with a total rolled compacted concrete (#RCC) volume of 10.7 million m³. RCC is a particular mix of concrete with low cement and water content, very dry and the mix characterized by extended setting times and superior mechanical performance.
Reservoir: surface area of 1,875 km2 and a volume of 74 billion m³. It collects rainwater and river water and channels it to the #maindam; the average annual outflow is estimated at around 50 billion m³ of water.

Hydroelectric power stations: 2 hydroelectric power stations installed at the base of the dam, & a secondary dam in loose materials (#rockfill) with a concrete facing 5 km long. The hydroelectric power stations are located on the right & left banks of the river and consist of 13 #Francisturbines, with a total installed capacity of 5,150 MW & an average of 15,700 GWh/year.
CO2 emissions: reduction of 1.3 million tons/year of CO2 emissions for the national power grid.
Workers: 25,000, with peaks of 10,000 ppl at a time. Over 95% came from nearby Ethiopian communities.
Structures to enable the construction of the dam within the site: internal road network, 2 bridges over the Blue Nile, landing strip for rapid connections with #AddisAbeba & 3 housing camps built to house 10,000 people, equipped with 3 medical centres & all the necessary services (schools, canteens, recreational areas, a club, a swimming pool, & sports fields).

Onsite health facility: A 24/7 #healthcare system was established with a 20-bed #hospital, six ambulances, 71 staff, and two #satelliteclinics. It provided free care, prevention, and vaccination (4,200+ vaccinations, 700,000+ services) to workers and nearby residents. Later handed to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, it ensured continued care and left a lasting community legacy.
Onsite food facility: Alongside three site #canteens, an #injera factory employing 84 people was set up. It produced over 6,500 injera daily (peaks of 10,000), totaling up to 3 million annually to meet workers’ needs.
