السر هو أن العنكبوت عندما يبدأ في صنع بيته ينسج طبقة أولى من الخيوط الجافة غير اللاصقة، وعندما تنتهي هذه الطبقة ينسج من فوقها طبقة ثانية من الخيوط اللزجة اللاصقة، ولكنه يترك مناطق معيّنة خالية منها يعرفها هو فقط ويمكنه التجول فيها بحرية، أما باقي الحشرات فلا تستطيع تمييز تلك الطبقة، لذلك تلتصق في بيت العنكبوت.
