International Scientific School Concludes in Namangan: A Foundational Step Towards Creating a Scientific Hub in Central Asia
From October 6-11 of this year, Namangan State University hosted the international scientific school-seminar, the "School on Materials Modeling and Simulation: DFT and Molecular Dynamics Approaches". This event was held within the framework of the prestigious "Physics Without Frontiers: Uzbekistan" program by The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).
This distinguished school, organized for the first time in Uzbekistan, is the result of effective collaboration between international scientists and a clear strategy. Specifically, the promising idea was proposed by Prof. Mehdi Allaei of the University of Tehran. This proposal was then adopted by Prof. Umedjon Khalilov (Arifov Institute of Ion-Plasma and Laser Technologies, UZAS / University of Antwerp, Belgium) within the framework of his strategy to create a scientific center in Central Asia. The initiative was successfully implemented through the significant efforts of the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Namangan State University, Prof. Bakhromjon Abdulazizov. The school brought together senior undergraduate (BSc), graduate (MSc), and PhD students in the fields of physics, chemistry, and engineering from Uzbekistan and neighboring countries.
At the opening ceremony of the event, the Vice-President of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences, Prof. Sirojiddin Mirzayev, and the Rector of Namangan State University, Prof. Abdug‘affor Qirg‘izboyev, delivered opening remarks. They touched upon the importance of the school and placed special emphasis on the fact that it was being held for the first time in Uzbekistan. They wished the young scientists success and highlighted the role of such international conferences in the development of science in our country.
The week-long school-seminar provided participants with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of modern modeling methods in materials science. Specifically, Prof. Vaez Allaei of the University of Tehran delivered high-level lectures on Molecular Dynamics (MD) in an accessible manner, while Prof. Javad Hashemifar of the Isfahan University of Technology lectured on Density Functional Theory (DFT). Prof. U. Khalilov participated as an assistant mentor in both areas, contributing to increasing the effectiveness of the sessions. In addition to theoretical lectures, practical hands-on sessions were held, creating an environment for participants to reinforce their acquired knowledge.
The closing ceremony of the school, held on October 10th, was also a festive occasion. It was attended by the Rector of Namangan State University, Abdug‘affor Qirg‘izboyev; Academician of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences, Sirojiddin Zaynobiddinov; foreign professors; and members of the scientific community. The highlight of the ceremony was the formal awarding of the title of "Honorary Professor" of Namangan State University to professors Javad Hashemifar and Mehdi Vaez Allaei by the rector.
At the conclusion of the event, all participants were awarded certificates. One of the organizers, Prof. U. Khalilov, stated that this school is not a one-time school but the first practical step in his grand plan to establish a major "Scientific Center for Computational Modeling in Central Asia". It is planned to hold this school annually in the future. This will not only strengthen the scientific ties between Uzbekistan and ICTP but will also create a solid foundation for training a new generation of scientists in the computational sciences throughout the Central Asian region.
