No matter who is elected to the Papal Throne, we must remember one thing.

This is God’s Church.

Christ gave us His promise in Matthew 16:18 that the Gates of Hell will never prevail, and no matter who sits on the Throne, that promise will always remain.

Relics in Scripture

Exodus 29:37: Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.

Exodus 30:28-29: And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. [29] And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.

Note here that first there is a β€œholy anointing oil” which is applied to the ark, tabernacle, and related sacred religious items β€œthat they may be most holy.” They in turn impart holiness to all who touch them, pointing to sacramentalism and the underlying principle of relics.

God said to Moses about the body of a lamb offered at the temple: β€œWhatever touches its flesh shall be holy . . .” (Lev 6:27

2 Kings 13:20-21: And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. [21] And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

Kings 2:11-14 β€œAnd as they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, β€˜My father, my father! the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and rent them in two pieces. 13 And he took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, β€˜Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?’ And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other; and Elisha went over.”

(Elijah’s mantle is an example of a β€œsecond-class” relic: items that have power because they were connected with a holy person.)

Acts 5:15-16 β€œ. . . they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16 The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.”

Acts 19:11-12 β€œAnd God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.” (cf. Mt 9:20-22)

Elisha’s bones were a β€œfirst-class” relic. These passages, on the other hand, offer examples of β€œsecond-class” relics: items that were connected with a holy person (Elijah’s mantle and even St. Peter’s shadow)

Saint Mar Ephrem the Syrian taught that there is a real change and he interpreted the Eucharistic words of Jesus in this sense that the bread and wine transform into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ.
