Does AI boost our productivity?

Sample: 107 empirical studies from 2020 to 2023.

The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies where people evaluated the performance of humans only, AI only, or human-AI systems (e.g., the use of AI by humans in medicine, economics and everyday activities such as shopping, communication, etc.).

Shown: human-AI systems perform a variety of tasks worse on average than the best-performing humans or AI alone. Human-AI systems are characterized by a loss of productivity in tasks involving decision-making but show gains in content creation tasks. The authors believe these results indicate the non-uniformity of human-AI collaboration.
