There have been a total of 430 Lok Sabha and state Assembly general elections in the last 72 years (1952-2024). At an average of 6 elections every year or 1 election every 2 months.

In the 430 elections since 1952, the Indian National Congress (INC) was the single largest party in 219 elections (51%), followed by BJP in 62 and CPIM in 27. However, in the 68 elections held since 2014, BJP was the single largest party in 29, INC in 12 and CPIM in 2.

The most number of elections in a year were held in 1967 (23). There were no Lok Sabha or Assembly general elections held in the following 11 years:
1986, 1981, 1976, 1973, 1966, 1963, 1961, 1959, 1958, 1956, and 1953.
