During the reign of King Constantine Tich feudal Bulgaria experienced an internal crisis. Economic instability was closely related to foreign policy failures and problems. The most serious of these, in the 70 years of the thirteenth century, was the Tatar invasions in Northern Bulgaria. The central government was unable to cope with them.

In 1277 a peasant called Ivaylo headed a group of villagers who took the defense against the Tatars in their own hands. The new leader won several consecutive battles against the hordes. Villagers gathered into his army and whole areas came to be under his authority. The Army of Bulgarian King Constantine Tich went against the villagers' army and suffered a crushing defeat. The Tsar was even killed by Ivaylo in the battle. The Byzantines then decide to make Tsar Ivan Asen III the new king in Tarnovo. He was the son of King Mitso, former rival of Constantine Tich. Unexpectedly, Queen Mary, widow of the late king made a bold move to protect the throne. She proposed marriage to Ivaylo. He married her and sat on the Bulgarian throne in the spring of 1278.

Benjamin Guy Horniman was one plucky British journalist who scorned the Empire's Raj over India and with great courage exposed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (April 13, 1919) of several hundred people ordered by a trigger-happy Acting Brigadier-General Reginald E. H. Dyer. One of many sensitive Britishers who opposed Great Britain's imperialism, particularly its oppressive rule over India, Horniman deployed his journalistic skills to garner public opinion for Freedom both in India and in his early media career in his motherland.

ColΓ΄nia do Sacramento was an isolated Portuguese colony build right in front of Buenos Aires in order to contest Spain’s dominance over the Plata river. To say Spain opposed its creation would be putting it mildly, it invaded Sacramento 6 times from its founding in 1680 until 1750, each time being forced to give it back to Portugal by the peace agreements. Finally in 1750 Portugal agreed to give it up peacefully, but the deal failed and Portugal returned in the 1760s. Spain invaded again and Portugal agreed to give it up again in 1777. Spain lost the territory with the Latin American independence wars, only for Portugal to seize the opportunity to take it again with the rest of Uruguay. Then Brazil became independent and took it from Portugal, only for a war with Argentina to break out in 1825 resulting in the territory becoming part of independent Uruguay in the end in 1828.

After the final defeat of the Khalifa by the British under General Kitchener in 1898, Muhammad Ahmad's tomb was destroyed to prevent it from becoming a rallying point for his supporters. His bones were thrown into the Nile. Kitchener was said to have retained his skull and, in the words of Winston Churchill, "carried off the Mahdi's head in a kerosene can as a trophy". Allegedly the skull was later buried at Wadi Halfa.
