i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times. source

greta was time's person of the year a few years ago. she was adored by all liberal world leaders and parties. and when she learnt about people's struggle under occupation and colonialism, she stood in solidarity with them . she now stands with palestine and armenia and kashmir and every oppressed person in the world. she could have been rich as fuck by simply remaining as a climate activist. yet she chose to do the right thing. i love her for her integrity. source
One of the world's largest solar farms is in Morocco in North Africa. This is sufficient to meet the needs of 2 million people .

I exist in this flawed world with a firm belief that there are situations that call for nuance. I also believe there are absolutes of morality that are not up for debate. One of those absolutes is that engaging in harm justification and harm minimization when children are impacted is morally wrong.

To ask kids to experience pain and suffering as a means to an end – always wrong. To have kids experience discrimination and then pretend it isn’t that big of a deal – always wrong. To say to a child, “I know this person just denied your humanity, but it’s okay because ____” – always wrong. When adults say, “When I was a kid, I went through _____ so you will be okay.” – always wrong.

When adults think they can manipulate a situation where kids have been hurt by engaging in justification and minimization, they are making the situation worse. They are dangerously establishing unhealthy and potentially more harmful patterns of thinking and behavior. I’ve watched this play out during my advocacy work with hundreds of schools, during my many years of classroom teaching and administrative experience, and one-on-one as a dad to two amazing children.

Today’s terrible Supreme Court decision singled out trans kids as not being human enough to receive the healthcare they need to thrive in the United States. Our highest courts will allow state governments to pass legislation that prevents families and kids from following the expert advice of their doctors. It’s morally wrong.

When you are talking with gender-expansive young people today, do not engage in harm justification or harm minimization. It’s fine to talk about this moment in the broader context of the history for queer liberation, but only if that doesn’t minimize the very real pain and suffering of kids today in 2025. Instead, talk about the power of community. Talk about how the existence of trans, nonbinary and gender-expansive children are a blessing, not a burden. Talk about the networks you are engaging to fight back against the fascism that is using their identities as a means to an end. Talk about how you will move mountains to get them the care they need – because they are worth it. source
