Perps trading might sound complex – but it doesn’t have to be.

We’ve prepared a simple, beginner-friendly glossary with the only Perps terms you actually need to know – making it easy for you to navigate.
📖 Dive in 📖

In Perps, you’re trading on price direction – not owning the asset.
📈 Going LONG means you expect the price to rise.
📉Going SHORT means you expect it to fall.
Example:
$BTC at $110K → long if you think it’ll hit $115K
$ETH at $3.5K → short if you think it’ll drop to $3.3K

⚙️ LEVERAGE lets you open a bigger trade than your balance allows by borrowing from the exchange.
Example:
$200 with 10x = $2,000 position
☝️ Your potential profits and losses both scale.
But risk isn’t just about leverage – it also depends on how much of your balance is in the trade.

💰 MARGIN is the money you put up to open a leveraged trade.
There are two types:
– Cross (used in Blum): your available Perp wallet balance supports the position
– Isolated: only the margin you set is used
More balance = more room for the trade to stay open, but more at stake.

💀 LIQUIDATION happens when your margin can’t cover your losses – the exchange closes your position automatically.
Example:
Long $ETH at $3,500 with 10x
Price drops to ~$3,150 → you’re liquidated. You lose your margin.
💡 Use stop-losses. Manage risk.

🔄 FUNDING RATE is a periodic fee traders pay each other to keep Perps aligned with the spot market price.
If more traders are long → longs pay shorts
If more are short → shorts pay longs
Small fee every 8 hours – but it adds up fast.
💡 Always check it before holding positions.

📊 PNL (PROFIT & LOSS) shows how much you’ve gained or lost on your current trade.
Example:
You long $BTC at $110K
→ Price hits $112K = profit
→ Price drops to $108K = loss
💡 It updates in real time – keep your eyes on it.

📌 Your POSITION is your open trade.
Long $ETH = you’re holding a long position
Short $BTC = you’re holding a short
💡 Know what’s active. Review it often. Don’t forget to close when it’s time to take profits or cut losses.

📈 Trend Trading
In an uptrend: buy pullbacks to support.
In a downtrend: sell rallies to resistance.
Example:
$BTC at $121.8K pulls back to $119.2K. A trend trader might plan entries near support, with stops and targets set, then trail stops if price breaks highs.

⚡ Day Trading / Scalping
Quick trades on small timeframes using patterns like breakouts, reversals, or “head & shoulders.”
Avg hold: 30–60 min.
Example:
$BTC hits resistance at $120.2K, rejects on lower timeframes, and forms a short setup with a tight stop and modest target.

🕰️ Hold Trading
Holding a position for days or weeks to catch bigger moves.
Example:
$ETH trades at $4,500 amid rumors of a big partnership. A trader holds through the wait, and two weeks later, news breaks – ETH rallies. Patience and funding cost awareness are crucial here.

📝 Practice First
Paper trading = testing strategies without risking capital.
Log your hypothetical trades – entry, stop, target – and check later how they played out. After dozens of tracked setups, you’ll see patterns in what works before going live.
