Discrimination against Transgender People: Supreme Court Forms Committee To Formulate Equal Opportunity Policy 🌈⚖️
On October 17, the Supreme Court took a decisive step to ensure equality and dignity for transgender persons, forming a committee led by Justice Asha Menon to frame a comprehensive Equal Opportunity Policy.
Acting on the petition of Ms. Jane Kaushik, a transgender teacher who faced systemic workplace discrimination, the Court directed the Centre, UP, and Gujarat to pay penalties for failing to protect transgender rights. It also ordered all States and UTs to set up Transgender Welfare Boards, Protection Cells, and a toll-free helpline to report violations.
This ruling reaffirms the spirit of the NALSA (2014) judgment and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, ensuring constitutional equality is not just on paper but in practice.
