Firecrackers or Clean Air ? | Deep Dive with VisionIAS

As Diwali approaches, the Supreme Court is set to hear the firecracker ban case in Delhi-NCR, raising a tough question: if we protect Delhi from pollution, shouldn’t we protect everyone else too?
The issue isn’t just legal-it’s ethical, environmental, and economic. When one person’s breath competes with another person’s bread, how do we move forward?

🔍 What’s Really Happening:
🎆 The Festival Dilemma – Diwali is a time of celebration, but bursting firecrackers releases harmful gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. PM2.5 levels spike up to 35 times normal, causing asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems.

💸 The Livelihood Challenge – The Rs 6,000 crore Sivakasi firecracker industry supports over 8 lakh workers, many from marginalized communities. A total ban could devastate these families, while illegal Chinese crackers continue to circulate.

📰 Latest Issue – Ahead of Diwali 2025, the Supreme Court will hear the matter on October 10. The Centre seeks time to balance public health with manufacturers’ rights, while the CAQM highlights weak enforcement, fake green cracker QR codes, and the need for year-round monitoring. Only a balanced approach can ensure environmental justice without harming livelihoods.
