LETTERS FROM PRISON: RACHAEL POWELL 030324

"I received two messages from Rachel Powell. I am sure all of us J6ers advocates did. I am still posting it here so you can see them. "

Message #1

Tonight I had to leave dinner in chow after 10 minutes and put a half a tray of food in the trash.

I am writing this on a partially empty stomach with a 14 lb weight loss in less than 2 months since coming to this SFF Hazelton facility.

Many of the officers have been nice and receptive when they were presented with me wanting to follow policy and be allowed to eat for at least 20 minutes, if necessary. (We do not always need that long and when I am given the opportunity to eat all my food I always get up and leave immediately even when done.) Some of the officers understand that I am losing weight, partially due to inadequate food and partially due to not being allowed to eat it. But there is one officer specifically who just has a real problem letting me eat. Tonight when he said mainline would be closed in 2 minutes, after being in the cafeteria for 8 minutes (I always time it), I politely went up to him with my tray "Officer Thompson, can I please finish my food? I will not be able to eat this in 2 minutes." Note: I had been sitting BY MYSELF and not talking at the table. His response was "No, you need to get out of your unit earlier or go to medical. Last time you got up and moved and were bullshitting."

Not that it should matter because the real problem is the lack of following policy, but I am always one of the first out the door of my unit and I walk swiftly past the few slow walking inmates that happen to get in front of me. I do not play around. Also, I have spoken to medical who say they have no affect on chow times. Lastly, the "last time" he is referencing is when I stood up, went to the table beside me, traded food (officer's told me I can trade food in order to get more of what I can eat so I get more calories), and then sat down BY MYSELF and did not talk to anyone. The "last time" is the incident where he screamed and yelled at me in such a terrible manner that women were checking up on me to make sure I was okay.

This place is a total embarrassement. The FBOP has really gone downhill. It used to be that they followed policy. I have to wonder if they have gone so far downhill in 20 years that they are ok with starving an inmate what will it be like by time my grandchildren or great grandchildren are adults? If we do not do something to reform the system we are going to be looking at concentration camp type situations in 20 or 30 years, especially if they are run by a psychotic administration like the one we currently have.

Please pray for the Officer that his cruel heart will be healed of whatever has made this behavior acceptable to him, or that the administration would control workers like him, and also keep me in your thoughts that I will be a light on this mountain. Tonight I am extremely frustrated.

Blessings,
28873-509 (I will sign with my number since they are trying to reduce Rachel to a number instead of a human.)
