🎮 ROG Xbox Ally Review @ Linus & Dave2D
⚠️ The Curse of the "Xbox" Name
When I first got the ROG Xbox Ally, I realized its "Xbox" branding is more of a curse than a blessing. The name sets expectations for a simple, affordable console experience, but in reality, what you get is a powerful—and expensive—Windows PC handheld.
🖥️ The Xbox Full Screen Experience
The "Xbox Full Screen Experience" software is a slick attempt to mask Windows, unifying my game libraries into one clean UI. But the illusion is fragile:
- Windows quirks, complex updates, and glitches constantly bubble up.
- Worst of all, despite the name, it can’t play most of my old digital Xbox games. That’s a massive failure.
🕹️ Hardware:
A Generational Leap
On the hardware side, the Ally is a triumph:
- Ergonomics are vastly improved, making it incredibly comfortable to hold.
- Controls—especially the thumbsticks on the premium Ally X—are a huge step up from the previous model.
💰 Two Very Different Versions
- The $600 non-X: A massive disappointment. Its outdated tech offers little advantage over the Steam Deck OLED, making it hard to recommend.
- The $999 Ally X: The real deal. A true flagship device that justifies its premium price.
🔋 The Ally X’s Killer Feature
The Ally X completely changed how I use handheld gaming:
- Delivers the same 1080p performance as the previous generation.
- Achieves this at a much lower power draw, resulting in fantastic battery life.
- I could finally play hours of high-end gaming away from the wall without stressing about a charger.
✅ Final Verdict
It’s not an Xbox—and that’s the truth. But as a PC gamer, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a clear step up and the new king of handhelds, thanks to its brilliant efficiency.
👉 For enthusiasts, the Ally X is the one to get.
👉 The non-X model? I simply can’t recommend it.
