The exact project will be determined in collaboration with you based on your strengths and interests, but could for instance involve developing new techniques for efficiently optimizing quantum computations, both in the near-term and in the fault-tolerant setting, developing new protocols in quantum error correction, finding more efficient ways to classically simulate quantum computations, or prove new foundational properties on the structures underlying quantum computations. A main component of the project will be using the ZX-calculus, a graphical language for reasoning more intuitively about quantum processes.

You are expected to take an active role in advancing the research projects of the MQS group. Our recent research has focused on the theory and applications of variational quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning. We also have activity in quantum optics, so additional experience and interest in this topic is considered a definite advantage. Theoretical research into the capabilities of quantum computing and quantum advantage is also a prospective topic, especially in relation to cryptography. The exact research topics can be adjusted within the limits set by our current projects according to the interests of the applicant. Your goal in research will be to produce world-class results, in collaboration with the other group members, and publish them in high-impact journals.

๐ฃ More information: The Quantum Computing Summer School is an immersive 10-week curriculum that includes tutorials from world-leading experts in quantum computation as well as one-on-one mentoring from LANL staff scientists who are conducting cutting-edge quantum computing research. Summer school fellowship recipients will be exposed to the theoretical foundations of quantum computation and will become skilled at programming commercial quantum computers, such as those developed by IBM, Quera, IonQ, Quantinuum, DWave. Roughly twenty students (with the precise number determined based on the applicant pool) will be awarded a fellowship from LANL for the summer school. The fellowship amount ranges from $10,000 to $20,000, based on academic rank. All students (undergraduate and graduate) are encouraged to apply.
