The Pritzker Prize is the pinnacle of recognition for an architect. Since 1979, it has celebrated those who transform the way we experience space.

But when we look at the geographical distribution of prize-winners, one reality jumps out: Of the 58 prizes awarded between 1979 & 2025, only 2 have rewarded architects whose architecture isn't very spectacular, but rather vernacular: L. Barragán (Mexico, 1980) & F. Kéré (Burkina Faso, 2022).

The 56 other prizes show an over-representation of architecture from mostly industrialized contexts, with evaluation criteria often based on values of monumentality, signature & high technology.

Despite the richness, diversity & ingenuity of vernacular architecture, recognition remains largely focused on the spectacular to the detriment of humility, sobriety & local relevance.

What if tomorrow's architecture came from where resources are limited, but collective intelligence abundant?
