The defining feature of a #Brutalist building is its exposed (naked) concrete.

The National Museum at 5 Kilo in Addis Abeba, designed by Ethiopian architect Gashaw Beza Tesfamichael, stands out as likely the only Brutalist structure in Ethiopia listed in SOS Brutalism, a renowned global archive of over 2,000 Brutalist buildings. However, its raw character has been diminished by a misguided renovation that coated the concrete in a dull, blotchy grey paint; masking its natural materiality and undermining its architectural integrity.

Addis Abebaโ€™s Unseen Crisis: Beyond the Numbers

'These snapshots capture a growing crisis in Addis Ababa: the visible rise of a new, precarious class of destitute people in Ethiopiaโ€™s capital. Once the domain of those facing generational poverty, the streets now hold families who never imagined they would be here โ€” pushed out by rising costs, displacement, and economic uncertainty. Their faces โ€” a reflection of a country in flux, where the line between stability and desperation grows thinner by the day.' writes Addis Getachew

"Architecture students today learn about everything except actually building"

"The required attributes of an architect are that one should have a good knowledge of building materials first of all, and structural knowledge โ€“ you need to learn a lot about how buildings are held up โ€“ but I think they should have education about aesthetics." writes Rupert Bickersteth

The Pritzker Prize is the pinnacle of recognition for an architect. Since 1979, it has celebrated those who transform the way we experience space.

But when we look at the geographical distribution of prize-winners, one reality jumps out: Of the 58 prizes awarded between 1979 & 2025, only 2 have rewarded architects whose architecture isn't very spectacular, but rather vernacular: L. Barragรกn (Mexico, 1980) & F. Kรฉrรฉ (Burkina Faso, 2022).

The 56 other prizes show an over-representation of architecture from mostly industrialized contexts, with evaluation criteria often based on values of monumentality, signature & high technology.

Despite the richness, diversity & ingenuity of vernacular architecture, recognition remains largely focused on the spectacular to the detriment of humility, sobriety & local relevance.

What if tomorrow's architecture came from where resources are limited, but collective intelligence abundant?

Bati: the city like music

Cities are made differently. Some are carved by emperors and become imperial capitals. In some, castles rise like stone memories of power. In others, obelisks stand as monuments to past glories. Some cities are garrisons that bear the imprint of conquest and ambition. Some are built by traders and tell the story of centuries of caravan trade and the soft hum of commerce through every courtyard. Some cities are shaped by industry, their activities dictated by the factory bell and the promise of modernity." Writes Siham Kamil
