๐Ÿ”†Dirang Geothermal Well

โœ…Indiaโ€™s Northeast witnessed a milestone in clean energy as Arunachal Pradeshโ€™s Dirang became home to the regionโ€™s first geothermal production well

๐Ÿ“What it is?

โœ…A renewable geothermal energy project using closed-loop binary Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) to tap Earthโ€™s subsurface heat for sustainable applications like electricity, heating, and agricultural processing.
โœ…Location: Situated in Dirang, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, nestled in the eastern Himalayan terrain.

๐Ÿ“Key Features:

โœ…Developed by: Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), Itanagar
Supported by: Ministry of Earth Sciences, Arunachal Pradesh govt, with global scientific partners from Norway, Iceland, and Guwahati.
โœ…Temperature Reservoir: ~115ยฐC โ€” ideal for direct-use geothermal technologies.
Low-impact drilling with precision targeting fault zones between quartzite and schist formations.

๐Ÿ“Significance:

โœ…First such project in Northeast India, with potential to power Dirang entirely via geothermal energy.
โœ…Reduces dependence on diesel and wood in cold Himalayan climates.
โœ…Can improve agricultural productivity and quality of life in high-altitude areas.
โœ…Adds to Indiaโ€™s geothermal potential (~10,600 MW), ensuring base-load renewable power, unlike intermittent sources like solar/wind.

๐Ÿ”† ARCTIC CIRCLE

๐Ÿ“ Water Bodies

โœ… Chukchi Sea: Connected to the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean via the Bering Strait at its southernmost end.

โœ… East Siberian Sea: One of the least studied water bodies in the area, experiencing an extremely harsh climate.

โœ… Laptev Sea: Surrounded on three sides by land.

โœ… Kara Sea: Located north of Siberia, between the Barents Sea and the Laptev Sea.

โœ… Barents Sea: Off the northern coasts of Russia and Norway; relatively shallower than other parts of the Arctic Ocean.
โ–ช๏ธ The sea is important for the exploration of hydrocarbon resources.
โ–ช๏ธ It is a productive fishing area.
โ–ช๏ธ The Pechora Sea and the White Sea are parts of the Barents Sea.

โœ… Wandel Sea: Stretches from Greenlandโ€™s northeast to Svalbard.

๐Ÿ“ Note:
HIMADRI โ€“ Indiaโ€™s research laboratory in Svalbard, Norway; near the North Pole.
๐Ÿ”†SOUTH EAST ASIA

South East Asia is divided into 2 parts:

๐Ÿ“ 1. MAINLAND PART โ€“ Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia
โœ… Capitals in North to South: Hanoi, Nay Payi Taw, Vientiane, Bangkok, Phnom Pehn
โœ… Capitals in East to West: Nay Payi Taw, Bangkok, Vientiane, Phnom Pehn, Hanoi

๐Ÿ“Œ NOTE โ€“ LAOS
โœ… All countries of mainland except Laos are on the coast
โœ… Laos is the only landlocked country and the only one which shares borders with all 4 other mainland Southeast Asian countries

๐Ÿ“ 2. MARITIME PART โ€“ Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines
โœ… Indonesia: Largest archipelago of the world

๐Ÿ“Œ Note โ€“
โœ… Myanmar: Part of both Maritime and Mainland South East Asia
โ–ช Arakanyoma and Pegu-yoma mountains in Myanmar
โœ… ASEAN: All these 10 countries are part of ASEAN
โœ… Equator: Passes only through Indonesia
๐Ÿ”† Bay of Biscay: A Key Feature of the North Atlantic

๐Ÿ“ Location
โœ… Situated along the western coast of Europe, bordered by France (east) and Spain (south).
โœ… Lies between 46ยฐN and 43ยฐN latitude, connected to the North Atlantic Ocean.

๐Ÿ“ Key Features
โœ… Shape & Size: Triangular-shaped bay, spanning approximately 225,000 kmยฒ.
โœ… Depth: Shallow near the coast; Bay of Biscay Abyssal Plain reaches depths of up to 4,735 meters.
โœ… Major Rivers: Receives waters from Loire, Gironde, and Adour in France.

๐Ÿ“ Oceanographic Importance
โœ… Strong Tides: Known for its high tidal ranges and rough seas.
โœ… Winter Storms: Frequent storms and powerful waves, especially in the northwestern part.
โœ… Marine Life: Rich biodiversity, with whales, dolphins, and seabirds commonly sighted.

๐Ÿ“ Historical Significance
โœ… Ancient Navigation: Vital for early maritime trade and fishing activities.
โœ… Naval History: Site of major battles during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II.

๐Ÿ“ Economic Importance
โœ… Fishing Industry: Historically a major fishing zone, though overfishing has led to reduced stocks.
โœ… Port Cities: Key ports like Bordeaux (France) and Bilbao (Spain).

๐Ÿ“ Unique Insights
โœ… Underwater Features: Includes submarine canyons like Capbreton Canyon and sedimentary basins.
โœ… Climate Impact: Affected by the Gulf Stream, contributing to milder climates in coastal regions.

๐Ÿ”†New Caledonia:

โœ…It is a French overseas territory located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,500 km east of Australia.
โœ…It comprises the main island of Grande Terre (where the capital, Noumรฉa, is situated), the four Loyalty Islands (Ouvรฉa, Lifou, Tiga, and Marรฉ), the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines, and some remote islands.
โœ…Just over 270,000 people live in New Caledonia (2019 census).
โœ…Approximately 39 percent are indigenous ('Kanak'). The remainder are Caledonians of European, Polynesian and other (including Vietnamese, Indonesian and Algerian) origins.
โœ…It is one of the European Union's Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), but is not part of the European Union, the Euro or Schengen zones.

๐Ÿ“History of Island:
โœ…New Caledonia, originally inhabited by the Kanaks, came under French control in 1853.
โœ…Post-WWII, Kanaks gained French citizenship, but 1960s French migration made them a minority, sparking an independence movement.

โœ…Tensions led to the Matignon Agreements (1988) and Noumรฉa Accord (1998), promising three independence referendums.
โœ…The 2018 and 2020 referendums favoured France. โœ…Despite COVID-19 concerns, the 2021 referendum also favoured France, angering the Kanaks.
