Today Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) turns 126! 🎂
Still brooding in Cuba, sipping daiquiris, & rewriting sentences until they bleed.
This man once rewrote the last page of A Farewell to Arms 39 times & when asked why, said,
He fought in wars, loved too hard, drank too much, hunted stories & animals across continents, and wrote with a style so sharp it changed the shape of sentences. (Iceberg theory)
Another legend that was born on July 21st is
🎉 Tess Gallagher turning 82 today.
Poet, essayist, fierce advocate of grief & memory.
She built her voice in the silence that followed her husband's death Raymond Carver. not by mourning, but by threading him into every line she wrote.
She believes poems are “shelters for the unsayable.”
A poet of weather, grief, & hands...

In poetry sessions, u might get a comment like
“Your poem is too vague”
“What does it even mean?”
And yeah, sometimes it makes u doubt,
But then u stumble on a quote from John Ashbery :
Ashbery never wrote to explain. He wrote to open spaces,
to make u wander & keep searching, not for answers, but more questions.
And maybe that’s the point, maybe your poem doesn’t need to “make sense.”
Maybe it just needs to make someone stop,
& stay there a little longer.

Just as though we had a right to know.”

Invictus
—William Ernest Henley (1849–1903)
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
—William Ernest Henley (1849–1903)

P.s. He lost his left leg to tuberculosis at the age of 12. In his 20s, when the disease struck his other leg, he was hospitalized again in Edinburgh. It was during this 2y confinement that he wrote Invictus.
His friend Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, later wrote in a letter to Henley’s wife:
His friend Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, later wrote in a letter to Henley’s wife:
“I will now make a confession: it was the sight of your husband, limping about the rooms… that set me on the track of Long John Silver. It was the figure of my dearest friend, the great cripple, Henley, with his crutch and his resolute soul, that I borrowed for my buccaneer.”
