AgoraCon 2025 is coming!
As every year, our international convention is coming. This year, for the first time, AgoraCon 2025 will have two co-hosts: Les Hodgson from Newcastle on Tyne (UK) and Gea Ban Peng from Singapore. The tagline chosen for this year's gathering is "Speak Up. Stand Out"
Unlike other conventions that you might have attended in other organizations, our convention is not a one-way broadcast, but instead is fully participative, and live-streamed. Once again, we will be using Zoom as our platform, which means that anyone will be able to join, enjoy all the sessions, chime in during the discussions, show their talents, and much more. An additional novelty we are bringing this year and hope will allow everyone to participate more fully is that we're splitting convention over two Sundays - August 24th and August 31st, rather than a Saturday and Sunday.
AgoraCon 2025 is open to the public at large - nonmembers are also welcome to join.
As always, we will have four contests in our traditional categories : Humorous Speeches, Social Awareness Speeches, Educational Speeches and Storytelling. The rules remain largely unchanged from last year, but there will be one important addition :
New Contest Rule
AI-generated speeches will not be allowed to compete, and will be disqualified if detected
An "AI-generated speech" is a speech where more than 25% of the content is determined to have been written by an LLM model or any other generative AI technique. Detection will be performed via automated tools similar to the ones used at top universities to detect AI usage in academic work.
Does this mean you cannot use AI tools at all? Of course not. AI tools are invaluable as search instruments, for answering questions, providing translations, additional context, sources, and many other capabilities. They can near-instantly analyze data and provide insights.
However, Agora's goal has always been empowering and educating people to think on their own, therefore we expect you to be the gatekeeper. The critical thinker that curates the content produced by the LLM, that fact-checks the references produced by the LLM and ensures that it is not hallucinating and it is not seeding weird ideas.
Participation and dates
As always, you can participate in as many of the contests as you wish, and for each contest you need to choose through which club you want to do it. Please speak to your club president or Vice Presdient of Education (VPE) in order to sign up for the club-level contest.
Each club may send up to two participants per category to the AgoraCon semifinals, and once selected, each participant will need to record and submit a speech by July 27th. The speeches will be evaluated by our panel of judges, and the five participants with the highest score in each category will make it to the AgoraCon finals.
Contestants that make it to the final stage will compete live during the convention and once again, our panel of judges will evaluate the speeches according to the different rubrics. The winners of the speech contests in AgoraCon 2025 will be announced during the convention itself.
What kind of speeches can you present?
Make sure to check the specific rules and scoring criteria for each of the contests you wish to participate in. Especially if this is your first time participating, remember that not only a great delivery is required - great content is a must, and many of the scoring criteria are related to content.
At each stage of the contest (club, semifinals, final) you can present the same speech or different speeches. However, all speeches must be original (written entirely by you) and novel (created exclusively for this contest and never presented elsewhere).
